She discovered the first in a line of synthetic fibers with exceptional strength and hardness: poly-paraphenylene terephthalamide. For his discoveries, Kwolek received the Lavoisier Medal from the DuPont company for his exceptional technical achievement. In August 2019, she was the only employee to receive this honor. In 1995, she became the fourth woman to be added to the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Kwolek has won numerous awards for his work in polymer chemistry, including the National Technology Medal, the IRI Achievement Award and the Perkin Medal.
