Timbuktu is a city in Mali, 20 km north of the Niger River. The city is the capital of the Timbuktu region, one of the eight administrative regions of Mali. It has a population of 54,453 at the 2009 census. Timbuktu began as a seasonal colony and became a permanent colony at the start of the 12th century. After the change of trade routes, especially after Mansa Musa's visit around 1325, Timbuktu prospered thanks to the trade in salt, gold, ivory and slaves. It became part of the Malian Empire at the start of the 14th century. A Moroccan army defeats Songhai 1591 and makes Timbuktu, instead of Gao, their capital. The invaders formed a new ruling class, the Arma, which after 1612 was mostly independent from Morocco.
