Thomas William Heinsohn is an American professional basketball player. He has been affiliated with the National Basketball Association's Boston Celtics for six decades as a player, coach and announcer. He played for the Celtics from 1956 to 1965, and was also the team coach from 1969 to 1978. He has spent more than 30 years as a black commentator for local Celtics shows with play commentator Mike Gorman. He is widely regarded as one of the most iconic Celtics figures in franchise history, known throughout his life for his charisma and loyalty to the team and its traditions. . Heinsohn has been included in the Hall of Fame for his contributions as a player. He was also inducted into the Hall of Fame because of his success as head coach. He also helped form the NBA Players Association. Heinsohn is the only one with the privilege of taking part in the official place of a team in each of the 17 Celtics championships, as well as having participated in their 21 NBA Finals.
