Tomoyuki Yamashita was a Japanese general in the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. Yamashita led Japanese forces in the invasion of Malaysia and the Battle of Singapore, with a record of conquering Malaysia and Singapore for 70 days, earning him the title of "Malaya Tiger" and a made British Prime Minister Winston Churchill called Singapore's shameful collapse in Japan "worst disaster" and "greatest surrender" in British military history. Yamashita was tasked with defending the Philippines against advancing Allied forces later in the war, and although he could not stop the Allied advance, he was able to retain part of Luzon until after Japan. The official surrendered in August 1945. After the war Yamashita was tried for war crimes under his command during the Japanese defense of the occupied Philippines in 1944
