Vitus Jonassen Bering, also known as Ivan Ivanovich Bering, is a Danish cartographer and explorer serving in Russia and a Russian naval officer. He is known as the leader of two Russian expeditions, the First Kamchatka Expedition and the Great Northern Expedition, which explores the northeast coast of mainland Asia and from there the west coast of the North American continent. The Bering Strait, Bering Sea, Bering Island, Bering Glacier, and Bering Land Bridge are all named in his honor. At sea as a boy at the age of fifteen, Bering traveled extensively for the next eight years, in addition to receiving naval training in Amsterdam.
