William Orville Douglas is an American lawyer and politician who served as an associate judge of the Supreme Court of the United States. Appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Douglas is confirmed at the age of 40, as one of the youngest judges to be appointed to the court. His duties, which lasted 36 years and 211 days, were the longest in the history of the Supreme Court. In 1975, Time magazine called Douglas "the most prolific and committed civilian practitioner to ever serve in the field." After a childhood adventure, Douglas attended Whitman College on a scholarship. He graduated from Columbia Law School in 1925 and joined the law school of Yale Law School. After serving as the third chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Douglas was successfully appointed to the Supreme Court in 1939, succeeding Justice Louis Brandeis.
