Zainul Abedin
Zainul Abedin is a Bangladeshi painter born in Kishoregonj, East Bengal, British India, who became famous in 1944 through a series of paintings depicting some of the major famines in Bengal during British colonial times. After the division of the Indian subcontinent, he moved to East Pakistan. In 1948, he helped found the Institute of Arts and Crafts at Dhaka University. The Indian Express describes him as a legendary painter from Bangladesh. Like many of his contemporaries, paintings of the 1943 famine of Bengal are considered to be his most representative work. His homeland conferred the title "Shilpacharya" "Great Teacher of Art" for his artistic qualities and foresight. He was a pioneer in the modern art movement taking place in Bangladesh and was regarded by Syed Manzoorul Islam as the father of modern art in Bangladesh, shortly after Bangladesh was recognized as an independent republic.
