Francis Otto Schmitt is an American biologist and professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Schmitt was born November 23, 1903 to Otto and Clara Schmitt in South St. Louis, Missouri. He has two siblings, Otto and Viola. Schmitt's father owned and operated a paint and wallpaper store he founded with his stepfather. The store is on the first floor of the family's three-story home. Family rented an apartment on the second floor and lived in eight rooms on the third floor. Schmitt received his A.B in 1924 and his doctorate. in 1927 from Washington University in St. Petersburg Louis. During a summer research program at the Laboratory of Marine Biology in Woods Hole, Massachusetts in 1923, he worked with Haldan Keffer Hartline under the supervision of Jacques Loeb and Thomas Hunt Morgan. Schmitt joined the faculty in 1929 and taught zoology until 1941 .

Biologist who focused on developing X-ray technology for biological reasons while teaching at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1956, he was awarded the Albert Lasker Award for his services to medical science.
