Agnes Smedley is an American journalist, writer and activist who supports the Chinese Communist Revolution. Growing up in a poor family of miners in Missouri and Colorado, she dramatized the creation of her socialist and feminist consciousness in her autobiographical novel Daughter of Earth. As a university student during World War I, she organized support for India's independence from the United Kingdom, receiving financial support from the German government. After the war she went to Germany, where she met and worked with Indian nationalists. From 1928 to 1941, she lived and worked in China, mainly as a journalist. During the early stages of the Chinese Civil War, she was based in Shanghai and published widely in support of the Communist cause; after that, during the Second Sino-Japanese War, she went with the Eighth Road Corps and lived for some time in the Communist base in Yan'an.
