Alexander Murray Palmer Haley is an American writer and author of the 1976 book Roots: The Saga of an American Family. ABC turned the book into a TV mini-series of the same name and aired it in 1977 to a record 130 million viewers. In the United States, the book and mini-novels have raised awareness of black American history and generated widespread interest in genealogy and family history. Haley's first book, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, published in 1965, is a collaboration through lengthy interviews with Malcolm X. He is working on a second family history novel after his death. Haley asked David Stevens, a screenwriter, to complete it; The book was published under the title Queen: The Story of a American Family. It was adapted into a miniseries, Queen of Alex Haley, which aired in 1993 .
