Andrievs Niedra was a Latvian writer, Luther pastor and Prime Minister of the German Puppet Government in Latvia from April to June 1919, during the Latvian War of Independence. Niedra's first volume of poetry was published when he was only nineteen years old, and he was still a teenager when stories based on his history and folklore began to appear in the Baltijas Vēstnesis newspaper. From 1890 to 1899 he studied theology at Dorpat University. Combining realism and aesthetic idealism, his stories, critiques and plays often refer to the formation of the Latvian intellectuals and the position of the peasant class in the relationship with the Germans who dominated the Baltic region. Believing that society can only flourish through evolution, not revolution, Niedra is a staunch anti-socialist and is seen as reactionary in an increasingly revolutionary society. After cooperating with the German military authorities and failing, Niedra fled Latvia.
