David Mark Penney is a former English football player and coach. Born in Wakefield, West Riding of Yorkshire, Penney entered professional football at the age of 21 quite late. He worked as a mason and played nothing at the Pontefract Collieries for five years before being discovered by Derby County scout Ron Jukes, who introduced him to coach Arthur Cox. He was offered a contract at the third tier club then and they climbed two places before leaving Oxford United for £ 175,000. He then went to Wales, where he played for Swansea City and Cardiff City, then signed for Doncaster Rovers in 1998. He played in midfield.
