Edward Lawrie Tatum is an American geneticist. He shared half of the 1958 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with George Beadle for showing that genes control individual steps in metabolism. The other half of the prize went to Joshua Lederberg that year. Beadle and Tatum's main experiments involved X-ray exposure of the baker's Neurospora crassa bacteria, which caused mutations. In a series of experiments, they have shown that these mutations cause changes in specific enzymes involved in metabolic pathways. These experiments, published in 1941, led them to propose a direct relationship between a gene and an enzymatic response, known as the “one gene, one enzyme” hypothesis. Tatum continues to study the genetics of bacteria. An active research area in his laboratory is studying the basis of tryptophan biosynthesis in Escherichia coli. Then Tatum and student Joshua Lederberg showed E. coli can share genetic information by recombination. Tatum was born in Boulder, Colorado.
