Franz Waxman is a German-Jewish composer and conductor, best known for his works in the soundtrack genre. His film scores include Bride of Frankenstein, Rebecca, Sunset Boulevard, A Place in the Sun, Stalag 17, Rear Window, Peyton Place, The Nun's Story and Taras Bulba. He has received twelve Oscar nominations and won two Academy Awards in consecutive years. He also received a Golden Globe Award for a former film. Bernard Herrmann said Taras Bulba's score was "the score for life". He has also composed concert works including oratorio Joshua and The Song of Terezín, a work for orchestral, choir and children's choir based on poetry written by children in the Theresienstadt concentration camp. during World War II. Waxman also founded the Los Angeles Music Festival in 1947, where he conducted several West Bank debuts by other music composers and composers.
