Although the average life expectancy of people with the disease is 13 years, Okines was part of a drug trial that saw her surpass doctors' expectations over her expected lifespan. She died on April 2, 2015 at the age of 17, after living four years beyond doctors' initial forecasts. Okines was diagnosed with progeria when she was two years old, and doctors estimate her life expectancy to be 13 years. She traveled regularly to Boston in the United States to receive new treatments. In 2012, his autobiography, titled Old Before My Time, was published; it was co-written by Okines, his mother Kerry and contributor Alison Stokes.
