Ivan Mestrovic
Ivan Meštrović is a Croatian sculptor, architect and writer. He is the most prominent modern Croatian sculptor and a major artistic figure of contemporary Zagreb. He studied at Pavle Bilinić's stone workshop in Split and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where it was founded under the influence of the Secession. He travels across Europe and studies the works of masters of Antiquity and the Renaissance, in particular Michelangelo, and French sculptors Auguste Rodin, Antoine Bourdelle and Aristide Maillol. He is the initiator of the national romance group Medulić. During World War I, he lived in emigration. After the war he returned to Croatia and began a long and productive period of sculptural and educational work. In 1942 he emigrated to Italy, in 1943 to Switzerland and in 1947 to the United States. He is professor of sculpture at Syracuse University and since 1955 at Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana.
