Novelist Jacob Grimm was born on January 4, 1785 in Hanau, Germany (He dies at the age of 78, on September 20, 1863).
He and his brother Novelist Wilhelm co-wrote fairytales including Hansel and Gretel and Snow White as half of the Brothers Grimm. Kinder-und Hausmärchen (Grimms' Fairy Tales) and Deutsche Mythologie are two of his most well-known works. A noted philologist in addition to a mythologist, he also published the Deutsches Wörterbuch, a comprehensive German dictionary.
