James Luther Bevel served as minister and leader of the civil rights movement in the United States. As the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's Director in charge of Nonviolent Access and Education, he initiated, strategized, led and developed three major SCLC successes at that time: The Cross The Children of Birmingham in 1963, the Selma Voting Movement of 1965 and 1966. Chicago Open Housing Movement. He suggested that SCLC called a march into Washington in 1963. Bevel strategized for Selma to Montgomery marches in 1965, which helped Congress pass the Rights to Vote Act of 1965. . Prior to joining SCLC, Bevel worked in the Nashville Student Movement, hosted the Sit-Ins Nashville Lunch program in 1960, the Open Theater Movement in 1961, and recruited students to continue free running in 1961 after being attacked. He initiated and led a number of suffrage movements in 1961 and 1962 in Mississippi.
