James Montgomery Doohan is a Canadian actor, voice actor, writer and soldier best known for his role as Montgomery "Scotty" Scott in the Star Trek television and film series. Starship Enterprise's Scottish Chief Engineer Doohan's trait is one of the most recognizable elements of the Star Trek series and has inspired many fans to pursue careers in engineering and other techniques. He also made behind-the-scenes contributions, such as the early development of the Klingon and Vulcan languages. Prior to continuing his acting career, Doohan served in the 14th Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. He was also a pilot. He fought in Europe during World War II, including the invasion of Normandy on D-Day, in which he was wounded, apparently by friendly firepower. After the war he gained experience playing on radio and television, leading to his role as Scotty.
