He played Ajax in The Warriors, Albert Ganz in 48 Hrs., Dutch Schultz in The Cotton Club, Jack Duff in Miracle on 34th Street, Richard in Sex and the City and Harry Morgan, father of Dexter's main character. Since 2009, he has worked as a voice actor in Lexus luxury car advertisements. Remar studied theater at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater in New York. Remar's most recent roles include Frank Gordon in Gotham from 2016 to 2019, and since 2018, Peter Gambi in Black Lightning.
