Sandusky was an assistant coach throughout his career, primarily at Pennsylvania State University under Joe Paterno, from 1969 to 1999. He was awarded the "Assistant Coach of the Year" award in 1986 and 1999. Sandusky is the author of several books related to his experience as a football coach. In 1977, Sandusky founded The Second Mile, a non-profit charity that serves underprivileged and at-risk youth in Pennsylvania. After Sandusky retired in 1999 as an assistant coach at Penn State, he continued to work with The Second Mile at Penn State, maintaining an office at the university until 2011.
