John Gneisenau Neihardt is an amateur American writer, poet, historian and ethnographer. Born at the end of American colonialism in the Delta, he was interested in the lives of those who were once part of the Eurasian migration, as well as the indigenous peoples from whom they had relocated. His most famous work is Black Elk Speaks, which Neihardt presents as an expansive account of the medical practitioner Lakota Black Elk's perspectives. It was translated into German by Ich Rufe mein Volk. In the United States, the book was re-published in 1961, at the beginning of the growing interest of non-indigenous peoples in Native American cultures. Its widespread popularity has supported four other versions. In 2008, State University of New York published the book in a prominent annotated edition.
