Josephine Cochrane
Josephine Garis Cochran is an American inventor who invented the first commercially successful automatic dishwasher that she designed in her backyard warehouse, after which she built it with the help of mechanic George Butters, who became one of its first employees. She would have said, "If no one else invented the dishwasher, I would do it myself!" After obtaining a patent on December 28, 1886, she founded the Garis-Cochrane Manufacturing Company to manufacture her machine. Cochrane presented their new machine at the World Columbian Exhibition in Chicago in 1893, where nine Garis-Cochran washing machines were installed in restaurants and fair stalls and attracted the attention of many restaurants and hotels where the access to hot water shouldn't be a problem. She won the top award for "best mechanical construction, durability and suitability for her line of work" at the Fair.
