Kārlis Mīlenbahs was the first Latvian to devote his career to linguistics. Mīlenbahs studied classical literature at Dorpat University. He is the author of more than a hundred scientific articles on the language in Latvian, Russian and German, but his main achievement is that the Latvian-German dictionary remains the most important lexical work on the language. His controversy with the poet Rainis led to an important essay on Latvian literature published in 1909, and he was also the translator of Odyssey.
