Maulana Ndabezitha Karenga, formerly known as Ron Karenga, is a convicted criminal, American professor of African studies, best known activist and author as the creator of the ceremony. Kwanzaa Association of African Americans and African Americans. Born in Parsonsburg, Maryland, to an African-American family, Karenga attended the City College of Los Angeles and the University of California in Los Angeles. He was active in the Black Power movement of the 1960s and 1970s, participating in the Race Equality Congress and the Student Nonviolent Coordination Committee.
