McColgan holds the Northern Ireland record of 3,000 meters indoors with a time of 7: 54.48 as well as the two-kilometer and three-kilometer outdoor obstacle course. McColgan was born in Strabane, County Tyrone. He trained at Omagh CBS. He did not enter athletics until the age of 17 and was trained until 1986 by Malcolm McCausland. McColgan represented Northern Ireland that same year at the Commonwealth of Sports in Edinburgh and reached the final on the 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter course. He also raced for the UK in jumping at the 1991 World Athletics Championships in Japan, among his other accomplishments being the bronze medal on passing the 3,000-meter tower to the championship. He has five children with his ex-wife Liz, including athlete Eilish.
