She is best known for her leading role as Tracy Turnblad in the 1988 film Hairspray, for which she received a nomination for the Best Actress Independent Mental Award. She is also known for her talk show, Ricki Lake, which aired internationally from September 1993 to May 2004. When the show started, 24-year-old Lake and the youngest hosted a collaborative chat show at the time. In the fall of 2012, Lake began hosting a second collaborative chat show, The Ricki Lake Show. The film was canceled in 2013 after just one season, but Lake won his first Daytime Emmy award for this project.
