Subagio Sastrowardoyo is an Indonesian poet, short story writer, essayist and literary critic. Born in Madiun, East Java, East India in the Netherlands, he attended Gadjah Mada University, Cornell University, and in 1963 obtained a master's degree from Yale University. His debut as a writer was quite early with the publication of the Simphoni poem in 1957. This poem has been described as "grotesque, barbaric, sometimes shocking" poetry. Simphoni was followed by several attempts to write short stories, including the publication of Kedjananan di Sumbing, before Subagio chose poetry as his primary means of creation. After a long stay in the United States, he published a book of poems called Saldju in 1966. The poems in this collection address questions about life and death, and the necessity to have. "something to hold on to being threatened on all sides.", and is described as rather sober than his previous works.
