Il tenente generale Choummaly Sayasone è un politico laotiano che ha servito come segretario generale del Partito rivoluzionario del popolo del Laos e presidente del Laos dal 2006 al 2016. Choummaly Sayasone è nato ad Attapu. È entrato a far parte del Politburo del Partito nel 1991 ed è stato Ministro della Difesa dal 1991 al 2001. Successivamente, è stato il terzo vicepresidente del Laos dal 2001 al 2006. È stato eletto Segretario Generale del LPRP il 21 marzo 2006, dopo l'8 Congresso del Partito, dalla Prima Conferenza dell'Ottavo Comitato Centrale, succedendo a Khamtai Siphandon come il vero leader dell'economia del Laos.
