Geboren in Manhattan, New York, volgde hij culturele ethiekscholen en deed hij verdere studies via de Columbia University Open School. Hij studeerde piano bij Ernest Hutcheson en componeerde bij Rubin Goldmark aan de Juilliard School of Music voordat hij naar de Curtis Academy of Music in Philadelphia ging, waar hij piano bleef studeren bij Józef Hofmann. In 1931 studeerde hij muziekanalyse bij Sir Donald Tovey in Londen. Chasins' carrière als pianist liep van 1927 tot 1947.
