Alfred Gerald Caplin, also known as Al Capp, is an American cartoonist and comedian best known for his comic book satire Li'l Abner, created in 1934 and continued to write and painted until 1977. He also wrote the Abbie an 'Slats and Long Sam comics. He won the National Animation Association's Reuben Award in 1947 for Cartoonist of the Year, and their 1979 Elzie Segar Award, after dropping out for “Unique and exceptional contributions to animation”. The comics refer to the urban experience in the northern states of the United States until the year Capp presented "Li'l Abner". Although Capp is from Connecticut, he has spent 43 years teaching Dogpatch to the world, reaching approximately 60 million readers in over 900 US newspapers and over 100 newspapers in 28 countries around the world. Mr. Thomas Inge said Capp had earned a great personal fortune from the land and "had a profound influence on how the world views southern America".
