Alexander Craig "Alec" Aitken is one of New Zealand's foremost mathematicians. In a 1935 article, he introduced the general concept of least squares, as well as standard matrix / vector notation for a linear regression model. Another influential article co-authored with his student Harold Silverstone established the lower bound of the variance of an estimation tool, now known as the Cramér-Rao limit. He was elected to the Royal Society of Literature for his memoir of World War I, Gallipoli of the Somme.
