Alfred Douglas
Lord Alfred Bruce Douglas is an English poet and journalist, best known as Oscar Wilde's lover. While studying at Oxford, he edited a college magazine, The Spirit Lamp, which had connotations of homosexuality, and met Wilde, with whom he began a close but turbulent relationship. Douglas' father, Marquis Queensberry, strongly opposed the case and came forward to humiliate Wilde, blatantly accusing him of being gay. Wilde sued him for criminal libel, but some of his private notes were discovered and he was then jailed. When released Wilde lived briefly with Douglas in Naples, but they separated when Wilde died in 1900. Douglas married Olive Custance in 1902. They had a son, Raymond. Converting to Roman Catholicism in 1911, he refused Wilde's homosexuality and, in the Catholic magazine Plain English, publicly expressed anti-Semitism, although he rejected German policies.
