Ali Ahmad Said Esber, also known as Adonis or Adunis, is a Syrian poet, essayist and translator. He led a modernist revolution in the second half of the twentieth century, "causing a seismic" in Arabic poetry comparable to T.S. Eliot in the English-speaking world. Adonis publications include 20 volumes of poetry and 13 reviews. His Arabic translation of dozens of books included poetry by Saint-John Perse and Yves Bonnefoy, and the first complete Arabic translation of Ovid's "Metamorphoses". His anthology of anthropomorphic Arabic poetry, spanning nearly two millennia of poetry, has been in print since its publication in 1964. A long-time Nobel Prize nominee for literature, Adonis has been described as a poet, the Arab world's greatest living man.
