Andrei Andreyevich Gromyko was a Soviet Belarusian Communist diplomat and politician during the Cold War. He is Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Supreme Soviet Presidium. Gromyko was responsible for many of the major Soviet foreign policy decisions until his retirement in 1988. In the 1940s, Western pundits called him Nyet or "Grim Grom" because he frequently used the Soviet veto in the Security Council. the UN. Gromyko's political career began in 1939 with a job in the Department of Foreign People's Relations. He became Ambassador of the Soviet Union to the United States in 1943, leaving that post in 1946 to become the Permanent Representative of the Soviet Union to the United Nations. Returning to the Soviet Union, he became Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and later First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. He became the Ambassador of the Soviet Union to the UK in 1952 .
