Andrija Maurović is a famous manga author, often referred to as the father of Croatian and Yugoslav comics. He was best known for the Stari Mačak series, published mainly in the 1930s, eventually becoming a nickname for the author himself. He was born in Muo near Kotor in the Kingdom of Dalmatia to a family of diverse backgrounds, eventually enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb and then continued his career as an illustrator and author of fake comics for local publications. Along with other writers and artists, he founded the comic book magazine "Mickey Strip" in 1937, where most of his work was serially published. He is known for his raw and realistic style, using black and white contrast and dynamic flow through the use of perspective.
