Anna Maria Bligh
Anna Maria Bligh is an Australian lobbyist and former politician who served as the 37th Prime Minister of Queensland, serving from 2007 to 2012 as leader of the Labor Party. She was the first woman to hold either of these positions. In 2017, she was appointed CEO of the Australian Banking Association. Bligh was born in Warwick, Queensland and studied at the University of Queensland. Before entering politics, she worked for a variety of community organizations. Bligh joined the Queensland Legislative Assembly in the 1995 national election, winning the South Brisbane seat. She was promoted in 1998, under the leadership of Peter Beattie, and became Deputy Prime Minister in 2005 and State Treasurer in 2006. Bligh succeeded Beattie as Prime Minister in 2007 - as the first female prime minister. Queensland and Australia's third. She led Labor to win the 2009 state election, but in the 2012 election she suffered a huge defeat and announced her retirement from politics.
