Walter Arlington Latham is the third American basketball player in Major League Baseball. He played from 1880 to 1909 for the Buffalo Bisons, St. Louis Browns, Chicago Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, Washington Senators and the New York Giants. He was also the Browns' playing manager in 1896. Latham stole 129 goals in the 1887 season. His career total is 742, he ranks seventh of all time in majors. As a player and coach for the Giants in 1909, Latham at 49 became the oldest MLB player to steal a base. After retiring as a player, he went on to become recognized as the first full-time basic coach in baseball history. For many years, he coached and managed a small league baseball team. After retiring from baseball, Latham traveled to England, where he held baseball matches for soldiers during World War I and taught English baseball. He then worked in the baseball industry as a press staff.
