Asa Earl Carter was a 1950s Ku Klux Klan leader, separatist screenwriter, and later a Western novelist. He co-wrote George Wallace's famous pro-opposition line since 1963, “Divide now, segregation tomorrow, segregate forever,” and run for the primary. Democrat for Alabama governor with split ticket. Years later, under the pseudonym of self-styled writer Cherokee Forrest Carter, he wrote The Rebel Outlaw: Josey Wales, a Western novel that led to a 1976 National Film Registry and The Education of Little Tree, a successful award. The winning book was marketed as a memoir but turned out to be just a novel. In 1976, after the success of The Rebel Outlaw and its adaptation, The Outlaw Josey Wales, The New York Times revealed that Forrest Carter was in fact southerner of Asa Carter.
