August Wilhelm Hupel
August Wilhelm Hupel was a German publicist, philosopher and linguist in the Baltic region. In 1766–1767 he translated for Lühhike öppetus, the first periodical magazine in Estonian edited by Peter Ernst Wilde. In 1771 he published a medical manual, Arsti ramat nende juhhatamisseks kes tahtvad többed ärra-arvada ning parrandada. In 1780, Hupel completed a treatise on Estonian grammar, teaching the Estonian language to the two main dialects, Revalsch and Dörptschen, along with a comprehensive dictionary. The first dictionary edition consisted of approximately 17,000 words and a description of their morphology. The second edition, printed in 1820, is approximately 20,000 words long.
