Less than three months after taking office as vice-president on Saturday in March 1998, he succeeds Suharto, who resigned after 31 years in office. His presidency is seen as a turning point and a transition into the era of reform. As president, he liberalized Indonesia's political party and press laws and held democratic elections three years ahead of schedule, ending his presidency. His presidency lasted 517 days and his 71-day term as vice president was the shortest in the country's history.
