Benjamin West is an American artist who painted famous historical scenes such as the death of Nelson, the death of General Wolfe, and Benjamin Franklin drawing electricity from the sky. Completely self-taught, West quickly received valuable support and traveled to Europe, eventually settling in London. He impressed George III and took primary responsibility for founding the Royal Academy, where he became the second president. He was appointed court history painter and king's image supervisor. West also painted religious themes, such as the gigantic Conservation of St. Paul after a Shipwreck in Malta, at St. Peter and St. Paul's Chapel in Greenwich, and Christ Healing the Sick, presented for the National Gallery.
