He is the author of a series of famous Pulitzer Prize-winning Western America and for many years has written The Easy Chair, an influential column for Harper Magazine. DeVoto also wrote a number of popular novels and during the 1950s he served as a lyricist for Adlai Stevenson. His friend and biographer Wallace Stegner described Devoto as "flawed, brilliant, provocative, infamous, ... often wrong, often spectacularly true, always stimulating, sometimes angry, and never, never boring ".
