Brent Mydland
Brent Mydland is an American keyboardist, singer and musician. He was a member of The Grateful Dead from 1979 to 1990, a longer tenure than any other keyboardist in the group. Growing up in Concord, California, Mydland studied music in elementary school. Upon graduation, he performed with several bands and recorded an album with Silver before joining Bobby and the Midnites with Bob Weir and jazz veterans Billy Cobham and Alphonso Johnson. This led to an invitation to join Dead in 1979, replacing Keith Godchaux, who decided to leave. Mydland quickly became a prominent member of the dead, using a variety of keyboards, including the Hammond organ and various synthesizers, and singing regularly. He wrote a number of songs on the group's studio albums which were released when he was a member. After touring in the early summer of 1990, Mydland died of an accidental drug overdose.
