Walter Fenner "Buck" Leonard was the first American basketball player in Black League Baseball and Mexico League. After growing up in North Carolina, he played for Homestead Grays from 1934 to 1950, beating his fourth behind Josh Gibson for many years. The Gray Team of the 1930s and 1940s is considered one of the best in Black League history. Leonard never played in the Major League baseball tournament; He turned down an MLB contract offer in 1952 because he felt too old. At the end of his life, Leonard worked as a physical education instructor and vice president of a small league baseball team. He and Gibson were elected to the 1972 Football Fame Hall of Fame. In 1999, he was ranked 47th on The Sporting News' 100 Greatest Baseball Player list.
