Charles Gates Dawes is a banker, general, diplomat, composer and politician of the American Republican Party, who served as the 30th Vice President of the United States from 1925 to 1929. Born in Marietta, Ohio, Dawes attended Cincinnati Law School before starting a legal career in Lincoln, Nebraska. After serving as general manager of the gas plant, he led William McKinley's presidential campaign in 1896 in Illinois. Following the election, McKinley appointed Dawes to the position of currency comptroller, and he remained in that position until 1901 before founding the Central Trust Company of Illinois. Dawes was a general in World War I and chairman of the General Trade Committee of the United States Expeditionary Force. In 1921, President Warren G. Harding appointed Dawes as the first director of the budget department.
