Charles Goodyear is a self-taught American chemist and manufacturing engineer who developed vulcanized rubber, for which he received patent No. 3633 from the U.S. Patent Office on June 15, 1844. Goodyear is credited with inventing the chemical process to create and manufacture plastics, rubber that are waterproof and moisture-proof. Goodyear's discovery of vulcanization after 5 years of researching a more stable rubber and discovering the heating effect after Thomas Hancock. His discovery kicked off decades of successful rubber production in Connecticut's lower Naugatuck Valley, as it was used for a wide variety of applications, including footwear and tires. . The tire and rubber company Goodyear bears his name.
