Lynn's singing career began with her church choir when she was little. Her professional singing career began in 1976 when she got a job as a supporting vocalist for the national musical touring company The Wiz. Eventually, she landed the role of Evillene, the Evil Witch of the West, on her six-month national tour. Before appearing on The Wiz, Lynn recorded an episode of The Gong Show in early 1976. She got a perfect 30 when singing Joe Cocker's "You Are So Beautiful"; an earlier performance also scored 30, and in the crowd applause during the mediation, the juggler was deemed the winner. After the episode aired in the fall of 1976, the recording industry executives wanted to sign it.
