Lewis Burwell "Chesty" Puller served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps. Beginning his career fighting guerrillas in Haiti and Nicaragua as part of the Banana War, he subsequently served excellently during World War II and the Korean War as a high-level officer. By the time of his retirement in 1955, he had attained the rank of lieutenant general. Puller is the most beautifully decorated Marines in US history. He is one of only two American servicemen to receive 5 naval crosses and an excellent service cross. Puller's six crosses are the next number after seven times Eddie Rickenbacker has received the country's second highest military award for his courage. Puller retired from the Marines in 1955 after 37 years of service. He lived in Virginia and died in 1971, at the age of 73 years old
