He commanded the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean during the 1973 Arab-Israeli War and the 1974 Cyprus Crisis. He retired from active service in 1977. Murphy's son, Vice Adm. Daniel J. Murphy Jr., later also commanded the 6th Fleet, from 1998 to 2000
